Pierre SOULAGES (1919 - 2022) & MADOURA , ceramist Black glazed ceramic tile with blue design on reverse Manufacturer's stamp on reverse and marked EA (Épreuve Artiste) in blue. H. 2.5 cm - 22.5 x 22.5 cm Cracks and small chips around the edges. Provenance: tile offered in July 1978 for the opening of the Soulages exhibition at MADOURA by Pierre SOULAGES to the Duke and Duchess Philippe and Suzanne DECREON de SAINT PIERRE. Background: Pierre SOULAGES had already shown an interest in ceramics in 1968, when he created a major mural for the lobby of One Oliver PLAZA in Pittsburgh, USA. Comprising 294 tiles, this "fresco", executed in collaboration with Atelier Mégard, features a black and dark-blue glazed decoration. It is now on display at the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown.
