ISIS LACTANS - Lot 122
ISIS LACTANS Votive statuette representing the seated goddess Isis, dressed in the long, tightly fitting gown, wearing the tripartite wig topped with the horns and disc. She carries her right arm under her chest and holds the child Horus in her left hand. Bronze. Visible gaps. Egypt, Late Period - Ptolemaic Period. Height: 18.5 cm The goddess Isis is par excellence the Mother, the one who gives birth and takes care of her offspring. She was mainly worshipped in the Late Period as the mother of the god-child who was to be the avenger and protector of her father Osiris, but also the guardian child against all dangers. These statuettes, often in bronze, derive their iconography from Old Kingdom models showing the queen and the royal child. They were deposited in the shrines dedicated to the goddess in order to grant long life, prosperity and health to the devotee. Provenance: old German collection built up at the beginning of the 20th century.
