BUFFET-CHALLIÉ Jean-Laurent (1880-1943) - Lot 38
BUFFET-CHALLIÉ Jean-Laurent (1880-1943) Snowy landscape, oil on canvas, signed lower right. Size : 27.50x36 cm. Dirt varnish. Jean Challié was born in 1880. At the age of 17, he follows the courses of Gérôme in the company of Fernand Léger. In 1900, he attends the Médrano circus with Picasso, Max Jacob, Rouault, Van Dongen... and starts a promising career, but refuses any official event. He paints the Loing with Picabia, his future brother-in-law, and, in Montmartre, befriends Raoul Dufy. From 1909 until the war, he exhibited in many salons and galleries, and was unanimously acclaimed by critics (Apollinaire, Vauxcelles...). Gassed in 1915, he moved to Étival, a typical village on the Jura plateaus, where his mother's family owned a house. The Jura inspires him: landscapes, snow, farm work and family life. Between the two wars, he is again present in the salons and galleries (Manzi-Joyant, Allard, Bernheim...). He gets closer to Vuillard. But the second war isolates him in the Jura.
