FRENCH SCHOOL, second half of the 18th century. Upper part of an overmantel : Allegory of Louis XV protector of the Instruction. Apollo holding his lyre and Peace with his caduceus raise a laurel wreath above the bust of the king placed in a library, while cherubs, united by a garland of flowers, practice arithmetic, alphabet, geometry and mechanics. Oil on canvas. The upper part is in the form of a coat of arms (canvas covering; some restorations, especially in the lower part).
