POLYCHROME EARTHENWARE PLATE. - Lot 119
POLYCHROME EARTHENWARE PLATE.
Round in shape, with a central decoration of an Asian scene, representing a couple in traditional dress posing in a garden near a small bridge. The marli is decorated with a large stylised frieze of floral motifs surrounding six cartouches and surmounted by the interlaced monogram of King George and Queen Olga of Greece (G. O.) under the royal crown. Wear and tear of time.
Japan, late 19th century.
Diameter : 24.5 cm.
History: according to family tradition, this plate comes from a dinner service offered by the Emperor of Japan to Prince George of Greece (1869-1957), son of King George I of Greece. It is a thank you for having saved the life of the Grand Duke Heir of Russia, Nicholas (later Nicholas II), from an attack orchestrated by a samurai during the Grand Duke's official visit to Osaka in April 1891. The monogram in Greek letters G. O., was chosen in honour of the prince's parents.
