BOSWELL (James). State of Corsica, followed by a Journal d'u - Lot 4
BOSWELL (James). State of Corsica, followed by a Journal d'un voyage dans l'isle, and the Memoirs of Pascal Paoli. London [Lausanne], 1769. 2 volumes in-12, marbled basane, cold fillet, spine decorated, red title and tomaison pieces, red edges (contemporary binding). First edition of the French translation, illustrated with a large and beautiful folding map of Corsica, drawn up by Robert de Vaugondy, with the contours enhanced with watercolour. Account of the journey that this Scottish writer and lawyer undertook in 1768 to the island of Beauty, where he befriended General Pascal Paoli, one of the heroes of the Corsican revolution which put an end to centuries of Genoese oppression. One will notice on the back of the binding, stamped in the boxes, golden initials forming the word genestou (or genesiou) which is undoubtedly the name of the owner at the time. Tearing without missing the card. Rubbings on the binding, accidents to the headdresses.
