SLAVE. - AFFAIRE DE LA VIGILANTE, Nantes slave ship. Paris, - Lot 11
SLAVE. - AFFAIRE DE LA VIGILANTE, Nantes slave ship. Paris, De l'Imprimerie de Crapelet, 1823. In-8, brochure sewn with a thread, blue paper cover with the title in pen, modern folder and case. Original edition of this very rare pamphlet against the slave treaty. Account of the capture in April 1822 of the Nantes slave brig La Vigilante, at the mouth of the Bonny River in present-day Nigeria, by an English squadron stationed on the coast of Africa to prevent violations of the laws relating to the abolition of the slave trade that the European powers had signed at the Congress of Vienna on February 8, 1815. A large folding plate lithographed by Charles de Lasteyrie depicts the plan and cuts of the slave ship: it recalls the famous engraving of Thomas Clarkson's book Le Cri des Africains, whose French translation appeared in 1821. Small angular moulding.
