BECCARIA (Cesare). Treatise on crimes and penalties, transla - Lot 26
BECCARIA (Cesare). Treatise on crimes and penalties, translated from Italian, according to the third edition, revised, corrected and expanded by the Author. Lausanne [Paris], s.n., 1766. In-12, calf porphyry, cold fillet, smooth spine decorated, olive headband, marbled edges (contemporary binding). First French edition of this founding treaty of modern criminal law. The translation is by Father Morellet. Published in Paris, it will be followed the same year by an edition at the fictitious address of Philadelphia. In it, Cesare Beccaria (1738-1794) criticized the criminal law of the Ancien Régime, denouncing in particular the cruelty of torture and the irregularity of criminal proceedings. The publication of his book, in 1764, struck the opinion of the Europe of the Enlightenment and paved the way for penal reform. It is bound in the following pages: - [VOLTAIRE] Commentary on the book Des délits et des peines, by an Avocat de Province. New edition, corrected & expanded. S.l., 1767. Cf. Bengesco, no. 1724. - MUYART DE VOUGLANS (Pierre-François). Refutation of the Random Principles in the Treatise on Offences and Penalties. Lausanne, & is in Paris, Desaint, 1767. A well-bound copy at the time, but slightly shortened, especially the title of Beccaria's book, which bears the engraved ex-libris armorié by Robert Bouhier de l'Écluse (1799-1870), lawyer and politician, representative of the people and the department of Vendée at the Constituent and Legislative Assemblies of 1848 and 1849, where he was noted for his positions in favour of freedom. The latter voted in particular for the abolition of the death penalty on 18 September 1848.Interesting provenance.
