COURNOT (Antoine-Augustin). A treatise on the sequencing of - Lot 45
COURNOT (Antoine-Augustin). A treatise on the sequencing of fundamental ideas in science and history. Paris, Hachette et Cie, 1861. 2 volumes in-8, green half-basane, decorated spine, red title and tomaison coins, gilt head, untrimmed (contemporary binding). Original edition, very rare. Essential treatise in the philosophical work of Cournot (1801-1877), known for his work on the calculation of probabilities and the mathematical theory of political economy: One discovers there the concern to disentangle what philosophy has mixed up in the name of a regrettable confusion particularly evident among French ideologists, but also in the great "digestive" systems of German idealism [...]....] linguistics, history, economics, law meet with mathematics or physics according to a construction that is always intended, although it escapes arbitrariness, as the Universal Order wants (cf. In French in the text, no. 282). Book IV deals with society and humanity. The author gives his definition of political economy, which he considers not as one of those sciences that are called materialistic but rather as belonging to the family of mathematical sciences, in so far as it relates to the ideas of number and measurement (pp. 243-244). Some pencil notes. Scrubbing at the binding, spine passed.
