DEPARCIATES (Antoine). Essay on the probabilities of the hum - Lot 48
DEPARCIATES (Antoine). Essay on the probabilities of the human life span: From which we deduce the way to determine Life Annuities, both simple and Tontines. Paris, Guérin Brothers, 1746. - Objections made to Mr. Deparcieux..., with answers to those objections. S.l.n.d. - Additions to Essai sur les probabilités... Paris, Guérin &Delatour, 1760. 2 books in one volume in-4, marbled calf, double cold-filleted, decorated spine, red title piece, red edges (Binding at the time). Goldsmiths, #8233. - INED, n°1346. - SomeLandmarks in Actuarial Science, 1985, p. 13. Rare original edition of this founding work of modern French actuarial science. This first statistical work on human life expectancy was carried out by Antoine Deparcieux (1703-1768), a skilled mathematician who was a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and the Royal Societies of Montpellier, Berlin and Stockholm. It is to his credit not only for having built this table, but also for having established its theory. Deparcieux could be described as "the only great French theoretician of political arithmetic of the eighteenth century" precisely because of his meticulous and innovative work on these tables. He can also be considered as the pioneer of the mathematical theory of populations: from him comes the founding idea (cf. the reprint of the Essay on Probability...by INED in 2003). The Probability Trial contains many tables, some double-page and tabbed, including the famous Deparcieux mortality tables. These were used by French insurance companies in their actuarial calculations until the end of the 19th century. A complete, wide-margined copy of the Objections and the supplement published in 1760. A few scorched notebooks. Restored jaws, caps and corners.
