DUPRÉ DE SAINT-MAUR (Nicolas-François)]. Essai sur les monno - Lot 52
DUPRÉ DE SAINT-MAUR (Nicolas-François)]. Essai sur les monnoies, or Reflections on the relationship between money and commodities. Paris, Veuve Méquignon, 1746. 2 parts in one volume in-4, marbled basane, spine decorated, red title-piece, red edges (contemporary binding). INED, No. 1643. Original edition of the author's main work, decorated with a large folding table. Without being an economist, this scholar rendered services to political economy, by gathering with praiseworthy patience the materials necessary for the composition of [this work] (Coquelin & Guillaumin, t. I, p. 626). The second part, in separate pagination, gives the variations that occurred in the price of things during five centuries, from 1202 to 1742: a pound of cinnamon, ginger, liquorice, pepper, saffron, rice, butter or sugar, a barrel of wine, a sheep, a horse, an ox, a swine, a "man's day", the wages paid to 6 pickers for harvesting half an acre in 1515, a woollen glove, a pair of shoes, a hamper of barley, bran or oats, etc., etc. Clear molding at the corner of several notebooks, some freckles. Very restored binding.
