ÉPÉMÉRIDES DU CITIEN, or Bibliothèque raisonnée des sciences - Lot 53
ÉPÉMÉRIDES DU CITIEN, or Bibliothèque raisonnée des sciences morales et politiques. Paris, Nicolas-Augustin Delalain, Lacombe, 1767. 2 volumes in one volume in-12, marbled calf, smooth spine decorated, red title-piece, red edges (contemporary binding). INED, n°1737. - Sgard, n°377. Les Éphémérides du citoyen (1765-1772), founded and directed by Abbé Baudeau, is one of the rarest and most important economic periodicals of the 18th century. A copy bringing together the first two volumes of the year 1767 (monthly issues in January and February). The year 1767 marked an essential turning point in the history of this journal, which at that time became the official organ of the physiocrats: Abbé Baudeau, until then opposed to this doctrine, had just been "converted" by Le Trosne (October 1766), and Quesnay and his disciples, who had been removed in November 1766 from the editorial staff of the Journal de l'agriculture, thus found a forum to express themselves. Volume I contains the first text published by Quesnay in Les Ephémérides: Analyse du Gouvernement des Yncas du Pérou, by M. A. (pp. 35-54), a text happily announced by the editors: Those of our Readers who are initiated in Economic Science, will recognize the hand of the Master: they will congratulate us for being able to begin so happily [...]. Upper hinge split lengthwise (the flat still holds), head cover partly torn off, rubbing at the binding.
