GODIN (Jean-Baptiste André). Social mutuality and associatio - Lot 61
GODIN (Jean-Baptiste André). Social mutuality and association of capital and labour or extinction of pauperism by the consecration of the natural right of the weak to the necessary and the right of workers to share in the benefits of production. Paris, Guillaumin & Cie, Auguste Ghio, 1880. In-8, midnight blue semi-percaline, handwritten label on first cover, smooth spine, green title piece (contemporary binding). Original edition of this important work which constitutes the official founding act of the Familistère de Guise, the successful social utopia of Jean-Baptiste André Godin (1817-1888). Rare. The book contains the statutes of the Association du Familistère, the regulations of the Familistère and factory mutual insurance companies, and the Association's rules and regulations. Not being able to make a palace out of the cottage or pebble of each working family, we wanted to put the worker's home in a palace; the Familistère, in fact, is no other thing, it is the palace of work, it is the social palace of the future (Godin, 1874). A modestly bound copy at the time, bearing on the first course this handwritten label: Assurance des Dames du Familistère. A Familistère insurance fund was reserved for Familisterian women aged at least fourteen, whether or not they were salaried by the Association: this separation of men and women had been wanted by the workers themselves, who refused a common fund, claiming that women were more expensive and risked "eating the fund" (cf. Jessica Dos Santos, L'Utopie en héritage: le Familistère de Guise, p. 48). Minimal rubbing on the dishes.
