THE RIVER MERCIER. L.A.S. dated Paris, August 16, 1762 and a - Lot 73
THE RIVER MERCIER. L.A.S. dated Paris, August 16, 1762 and addressed to Messrs Roux frères, merchants in Marseille. 2 pages in-4, remnants of a red wax seal. Rare autograph letter from this economist and disciple of Quesnay. Alone without a treasurer, without a director of the estate, without anyone who could help me, I am busy submitting all the affairs of the colony into the hands of the Duke of Choiseul [...]. I am charmed, gentlemen, that you are continuing the operations of your father, his conduct and his reputation answer in advance to what one must expect from those he trained... We know that Martinique, invaded by the English in 1762, will be returned to France a year later thanks to the Treaty of Paris. It is Le Mercier de La Rivière (1720-1794), intendant of the island, who will be charged by the duke of Choiseul, to ensure the evacuation of all the English in accordance with the provisions of the treaty.
