[THE RIVER MERCIER]. The natural and essential order of poli - Lot 74
[THE RIVER MERCIER]. The natural and essential order of political societies. London, Jean Nourse; & in Paris, Desaint, 1767. In-4, marbled calf, spine decorated, red title coin, red edges (contemporary binding). INED, n°2794 (for the in-12 edition published the same year). - Schumpeter, p. 225. - Spengler, pp. 184-186. Original edition in-4 format. The best account of the physiocratic doctrine, according to Adam Smith. The author develops the political conceptions of the physiocratic school, of which he was the main codifier. He explains that legal despotism (as opposed to arbitrary despotism) is the necessary form for the happiness of societies; the sovereign must then bend to superior natural laws based on the principles of property, liberty and security : if these unfortunate Princes had had an obvious knowledge of the natural & essential order of societies, they would have found in its legal despotism, the true independence, the true personal despotism which is the object of their ambition; by its means, they would have reached naturally & quickly the last possible degree of wealth, power, glory & authority (pp. 178-179). Repeated wet stamps on the title in the margin on p. 41: Ex Bibliotheca FF. Praed. Conv. S.M. Magd. Apud. S. Maximinum. Some slight freckles. Restorations at the binding (corners, caps and hinges).
