MELON (Jean-François). Political essay on trade. Amsterdam, - Lot 84
MELON (Jean-François). Political essay on trade. Amsterdam, François Changuion, 1742. In-12, granite basane, cold fillet, decorated spine, cream title coin, red edges (contemporary binding). INED, #3123. One of the oldest theoretical treatises on mercantilism. The author, Law's first secretary, was a forerunner of the physiocrats and a proponent of economic liberalism (cf. Spengler, p. 60). His work, first published in 1734, was a small encyclopedia of the then prevailing notions about the general economy of a state, which led Melon to be called the first French theorist of the mercantile system (Harsin). Minimal rubbing at the binding, otherwise nice copy from the Starhemberg library (wet stamp).
