[Paris, 1749]. 2 volumes in-4, marbled calf, triple cold fillet, decorated spine, red title-piece, edges speckled with red (contemporary binding). Parisian forgery of the original edition. It contains, at the end of volume I, an errata sheet giving 35 corrections for both volumes. Distinguishing, according to the degrees of freedom they comprise, three forms of government, the republic (democracy and aristocracy), the monarchy and despotism, Montesquieu founded modern political science (In French in the text, No. 138). Copy bearing the ex-libris armorié of Count Charles Gravier de Vergennes (1717-1787), Minister of Foreign Affairs of Louis XVI and one of the architects of American independence. 2 misplaced leaves in the K book of volume II. Caps and bits skillfully restored in volume I.
