PECKER (Constantin). Social economy. Interests of commerce, - Lot 97
PECKER (Constantin). Social economy. Interests of commerce, industry and agriculture, and civilization in general, under the influence of steam applications. Stationary machines - railways - steamboats, etc. Paris, Desessart, 1839. 2 volumes in-8, long grain aubergine half-basane with small corners, smooth spine decorated, edges speckled with blue (Binding of the period). Very rare first edition of the first and probably most important work by Constantin Pecqueur (1801-1887). It was written in response to a question put out to tender by the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences: What can be the influence on the material economy, on civil life, on the social state and power of nations, of the driving forces and means of transport that are currently spreading in both worlds? After having studied Saint-Simonism, from which he retained the idea of economic and social organization, Pecqueur became fascinated by Fourierism, collaborating in the Phalanstery and in the writing of The Falange. In 1848, he appeared frankly communist and was appointed by Louis Blanc as private secretary of the Luxembourg Commission in charge of thinking about a new organisation of work in the interest of the workers (cf. Maitron). Attractive copy in contemporary binding, in good condition inside, from a foreign library (label and wet seal on the title). Small rubs on the back.
