MANUSCRIBE. - The Art of building in water and how to use it - Lot 132
MANUSCRIBE. - The Art of building in water and how to use it for all kinds of purposes. All for the use of engineering students. Manuscript in-4, marbled basane, decorated spine, red speckled edges (Binding from the end of the 17th century). A 17th century manuscript of xxxxx pages, divided into 23 chapters, the first of which deals with canals, then levelling, locks, aqueducts, reservoirs, harbours, etc. It begins with a table of chapters and includes at the end a dictionary of the most difficult words and an explanation of the figures. The volume is illustrated with 6 detailed and very finely coloured technical plates, the first one giving a Map of the Royal Canal of the Jonction des Mers describing its route from Sète to Toulouse. This canal, the work of Pierre Paul Riquet, built under the control of Colbert between 1666 and 1681, took the name of Canal royal du Languedoc, renamed Canal du Midi during the Revolution. Rather rubbed binding, snagging on the spine, blunt corners.
