WEISS (Johann Martin). Representation of the celebrations gi - Lot 138
WEISS (Johann Martin). Representation of the celebrations given by the city of Strasbourg for the King's convalescence, on the arrival and during His Majesty's stay in this city. Paris, Laurent Aubert, 1745. Large folio, red morocco, royal coat of arms in the centre, large special lace with recipient's coat of arms in the corners, decorated back (Padeloup). Magnificent festival book, entirely engraved on copper, illustrated with a title engraved by Marvye, an equestrian portrait of Louis XV engraved by Wille after Parrocel, 11 double-page plates engraved by Le Bas after Weiss depicting the arrival of the King, the procession, the entrance to Strasbourg, the decorations and festivities, etc., and 20 pages of text with various frames and fleurons. This publication was ordered by François-Joseph de Klinglin, lender to the city of Strasbourg, to immortalise the triumphal entry of Louis XV into the Alsatian city on 5 October 1744. Copy of present in the luxurious coat of arms binding designed by Padeloup, signed with his label. The recipient's coat of arms, with a saltire flanked by four martlets, charged on the whole with a lampassed lion, could be that of François-Xavier Cardin Le Bret de Flacourt (1719-1765), Count of Selles, Advocate General at the Grand Council since 1741 and Intendant of Brittany from 1753.
