SANTO DOMINGO. - GUÉTROT (Maixent). Study on the political and social history of Santo Domingo. 1789-1792. S.l.n.d. [1903]. Manuscript in-4 (315 x 235 mm) of 135 pages, half black cloth, smooth spine (contemporary binding). INTERESTING CALLIGRAPHY MANUSCRIPT on bristol board paper, probably composed for the graduation diploma de la faculté des lettres de Paris in June 1903 (cf. the reference to this dissertation in the Revue d'histoire moderne et contemporaine, XVII, 1912, p. 397). This memoir is divided into 23 chapters dealing with the general administration of the colony, the social state, the economic situation, the troubles, the colonial assembly of Saint-Marc, the revolt of the mulattos and slaves, the civil commissioners, etc. It is enriched with a map of Saint-Marc. Domingue drawn in pencil and 18 original drawings reproducing portraits and historical scenes from 18th century engravings. Among these drawings is a double-page reproduction of a large satirical engraving with a caption Discussion about coloured men. and showing the various protagonists in the conflict at the time, including Julien Raimond, a citizen of colour, depicted tearing the Declaration of Human Rights. Small slit on the edge of the large engraving, which is detached. Used binding, spine reinforced with adhesive.
