MACAULAY (Zechariah). Haiti, or Genuine Intelligence on the Abolition of Slavery and its Results in Santo Domingo and the Guadeloupe, with details on the current state of Haiti and the emancipated Blacks who make up its population. - Facts and information, proving the advantages of free labour over forced labour, and indicating the most appropriate means to hasten the abolition of slavery in the colonies European. The first French editions of these two pamphlets were written by Macaulay (1768-1838), a colonial governor of Scottish origin and a prominent figure in the Scottish history of Canada. the leading light of the British abolitionist movement. The first work, cited by Sabin under n°42952, is dedicated to the Duke de Broglie, president of the Society for the Abolition of Slavery. It contains two important memoirs on the abolition of slavery in Haiti and Guadeloupe. The second pamphlet, a sort of complement to the one above, gives details on the effects of free labor in the colonies of Puerto Rico, Cuba, Haiti, Caraccas (Venezuela?), Bahamas and Sierra Leone. Chapter IV (pp. 92-114) contains the plan proposed by the author for safely and advantageously convert the 800,000 slaves in the British colonies into free workers. Freckles.
