FÉLICE (Guillaume de). Immediate and complete emancipation of slaves. Appeal to abolitionists. Paris, Delay, 1846. In-8, paperback, untrimmed, yellow printed cover. Sabin, #24009. Original edition. A PLEA FOR IMMEDIATE ABOLITIONISM, ONE OF THE BEST EVER WRITTEN ON THE SUBJECT. Félice asserts that slavery is a crime and that the idea of preparing slaves gradually for emancipation is a great and deplorable illusion, pointing out that gradualist approaches had had little success and that Mackau's laws had brought only fruitless reforms. He insists that the French should work tirelessly for the immediate liberation of slaves through activism, the creation of of associations, the drafting of pamphlets and petitions (cf. Lawrence C. Jennings, La France et l'abolition de l'esclavage, 2010, pp. 239-240). The author concludes with these words: In 1789, France opened a new era for nations. It established, supported, propagated, raised at the cost of his blood religious freedom, civil liberty, equal rights.... But one lesson is missing from his glorious teaching, and as long as he remains in our colonies a single slave, the work of 1789 will not be completed. Old handwritten note about Lord Howick and Jamaica on the cover. Scattered light freckles.
