GRANDPRÉ (Louis Ohier, Count of). Journey to the west coast of Africa, made in the years 1786 and 1787. Chadenat, n°6253 (indicates by mistake 12 pl.). - Gay, n°3014. Original edition, decorated with 3 maps and 8 beautiful intaglio engraved folding plates depicting natives and scenes of customs. Account of the expedition led in 1786-1787 by the slave captain Louis de Grandpré (1761-1846) on the west coast of Africa, now corresponding to the coasts of Gabon, Congo and Angola. It contains descriptions of morals, customs and laws, the government and commerce of that country and denounces the slave trade before the French Revolution and on the eve of the restoration of the slave trade. of slavery by Napoleon (1802). An interesting Congolese vocabulary occupies pages 156-162 of Volume I. Slight freckles. Rubbed hinges.
