ULLOA (Antoine de) and George JUAN. Historical journey of So - Lot 598
ULLOA (Antoine de) and George JUAN. Historical journey of South America made by order of the King of Spain. Amsterdam and Leipzig, Arkstée & Merkus, 1752. 3 parts in 2 volumes in-4, marbled calf, decorated spine, red title and brown tomaison pieces, slices speckled with blue (Dutch binding at the time). Leclerc, n°1501. - Sabin, n°36812. First French edition, decorated with 2 frontispieces, 46 folding plates numbered I to XLVI (figures XIX and XX are printed on the same sheet; no figure XXI but three figures noted XXI A, XXI B and XXI C), and 8 remarkable full-page figures illustrating the Historical Abstract of the origin and succession of the Incas and other rulers of Peru (vol. II, pp. 209-316). ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ACCOUNTS OF THE 18TH CENTURY FOR THE KNOWLEDGE OF PERU AND CHILE. The third part contains Astronomical and physical observations made by the authors during their journey. Pleasant copy in a Dutch binding decorated on the spine with a small repeated gilt iron depicting a marotte. One will also notice the scene of deer hunting shown at the tail of the volumes by the use of two different large wheels, the one in volume I showing the blowing venison in one horn, and the other, in Volume II, the hunted game. From Colonel Ph. Milon's library. A few slight freckles. Mention of a slightly faded tomaison on the back of volume II, insolated upper hinge. Minimal rubbing.
