KEYBOARD (Étienne). Address of the Société des Amis des Noir - Lot 602
KEYBOARD (Étienne). Address of the Société des Amis des Noirs, to the National Assembly, to all cities of commerce, to all factories, to the colonies, to all the societies of the Friends of the Constitution. Paris, Desenne, Bailly, and to the Bureau du Patriote françois, July 10, 1791. In-8, aubergine half calf, smooth spine decorated (modern binding). Martin & Walter, n°7610. - Sabin, n°13515. Second edition, enlarged, published the same year as the original. Genuine manifesto of the Société des Amis des Noirs, founded in 1788 by Clavière and Brissot de Warville, composed in reaction to a libelle de Moreau de Saint-Méry writes with the blood of colored citizens and unfortunate slaves (p. XX). HIGHLY IMPORTANT Piece on the economic and political relations with the colonies, and on the social unrest that led to the abolition of slavery (cf. cat. Thomas-Scheler, Black slave trade and slavery, 1985, No. 97). Handwritten inscription of the time on the false title: Cholet de Nantes rue de Chartres monk desporté (?). This would be Paul Champeaux, Benedictine born in Cholet and sent to Nantes where he perished with other priests from Nantes in 1793? A few slight freckles, if not a pleasant example.
