MARINE. - Order of Louis XIV, King of France and Navarre. Gi - Lot 606
MARINE. - Order of Louis XIV, King of France and Navarre. Given at Fontainebleau in the month of August 1681. Touching the Navy. Paris, Denys Thierry and Christophe Ballard, 1681. In-4, granite basane, ornate back, red title coin, red speckled edges (Binding of the time). Original edition of COLBERT'S MAJOR ORDER ON THE MARINE, one of the most important laws promulgated under the Old Regime, also known as the Naval Code. For the first time in the world, it presented a complete Code for the whole of Maritime Law dealing with both the subject of the commerce and contracts of administration, police, procedure, fishing, navigation and seafarers. It was the first and only Corpus Juris Maris which came into being (Jean Chadelat, "L'élaboration de l'ordonnance de la Marine d'août 1681" in Revue historique de droit French and foreign, 1954, vol. 31, pp. 74-98). Several articles deal with the cod and whale fisheries, and thus with Canada and Newfoundland. A few freckles, folio 273 and the privilege flyer are poorly bound in the table. Slit in one bit, missing head cap, rubbing at the binding.
