SANTO DOMINGO. - Rights of sovereignty of France over Santo - Lot 610
SANTO DOMINGO. - Rights of sovereignty of France over Santo Domingo, contract establishing it, breach of this contract, principles of compensation invoked by the settlers. Paris, Imprimerie de Dondey-Dupré, 1821. Platelet in-8, raspberry glossy paperboard, Gilded lace, smooth spine decorated, inside roulette wheel (Binding of the period). Very rare plate. As the false title indicates, it is a Memoir of the Settlers of Santo Domingo, presented to the King and the Chambers, in which the latter announced the inevitable fall of Haitian independence and demanded the enforcement of France's right of sovereignty over the island. An interesting list of the settler-owners in Santo Domingo, refugees in France, who subscribed to this brief, is on pp. 49-56. Back's been redone.
