Set in 18k (750) yellow gold consisting of a pendant brooch - Lot 32
Set in 18k (750) yellow gold consisting of a pendant brooch and a pair of articulated earrings decorated with pendants and micromasic motifs depicting the heads of pharaohs and beetles. (Small mq.) Italian work from Rome, probably around 1870. In its original case from the house of Cesare Tombini. Gross weight: 67.89 g. Ancient Greek and Italian mosaics were brought back into fashion at the end of the 18th century by the Roman jewellers. They no longer used it with fragments of coloured stones but with thin stained glass rods to create subjects representing mainly landscapes, animals or views of monuments. These were then frequently sold to European travellers, who brought home the original jewellery that they liked so much. This set, still complete and in its original case, has a rare decoration of heads of pharaohs and beetles symbolizing power and immortality. It was made around 1870 and some jewels of a similar decoration are reproduced in: Micromosaics: The Gilbert Collection by Jeannette Hanisee Gabriel (n°189), and : Roman Mosaic, di Roberto Grieco, Arianna Gambino, pages 49 and 51.
