Illuminated letter D from an antiphonary or a gradual with a - Lot 135
Illuminated letter D from an antiphonary or a gradual with acanthus leaves, cut-out leather, a winged helmeted man's bust, a jewel with emerald cabochon and pearls. Reverse, fragment of highlighted text with collector's stamp. Spain, second half of the 16th century H.: 24,8 cm - W.: 20,9 cm (Slight accidents) Provenance: Former collection of Robert Forrer (1866-1947), archaeologist and art historian, Strasbourg (Lugt, n°L.941a) This impressive initial is to be compared with the letters E and I in the collections of the Louvre (Inv. 33531 and 33531bis) and the A kept at the Art Institute of Chicago (1926.1572). These very large letters come from the same choir book, probably dismembered during the Revolution, whose painter and illuminator remains anonymous. One can recognize his blue or red backgrounds, his taste for orfeited and naturalistic motifs, the shadows cast and the delicate small gold scrolls. Book consulted: F. Avril, N. Reynaud and D. Cordellier under the direction of, Les Enluminures du Louvre - Moyen Age et Renaissance, Paris, 2011, p 258-260.
