H.: 45 cm - W.: 32 cm 19th century wood and gilded stucco frame with foliage motif Provenance: 1 - Berlin, Berliner Kunstauktions - Haus, GebrüderHeilbron; Collection Madame La Comtesse Valdelomar: Nachlass, Gemâlde Alter Meister, April 17, 1913, catalogue no. 68 as "Giovanni Battista Moroni, Brescia, 1520 - 1578; KopfeinesAlten Mannes" (reproduced; tafel 68) ; 2 - Paris, Hôtel - Drouot, René Ballu commissaire - priseur; F. Marboutin, expert, 08 April 1914, n° 32, p. 7 of the catalogue as "School of Franz Pourbus. Presumed portrait of Pierre Jeannin, minister of Henri IV and Marie de Médicis". 2 - Analogies: Musée National du Château de Versailles, Quesnel François 1er (After) Pierre Jeannin, Canvas, 61 x 50 cm (Les Peintures. Volume II. P. 731, n° 4131, reproduced) Three works confirm the identification with Pierre Jeannin of the portrait proposed at the sale of April 8, 1914: the drawing by François Quesnel (1545 - 1616) kept in the Cabinet des Estampes of the Bibliothèque Nationale (reserve Na 22 (14) - box ecu), the painted portrait belonging to the Château de Versailles, and the later engraving by Robert Nanteuil (1623 - 1678) (Cf. Claire Constans, Musée National du Château de Versailles. Les Peintures, Volume II, 4131, p.732; MV 4137 - RMN 1995). On the base supporting the engraved portrait set in an oval by Robert Nanteuil are his titles: Messire Pierre Jeannin first President of the Parliament of Burgundy, Superintendent of Finances, Minister of State. These three portraits: the drawing, the painted replica and the engraving are in the same sense as our painting. The features of Pierre Jeannin, with his broad and bald forehead, and his thick beard, are perfectly recognizable on his statue kneeling in prayer, in his parliamentary dress, at the side of his wife Anne Guénot, in the cathedral of Autun.
