CANTI GIOVANNI (Attributed to) Parma 1653- Mantua 1710 Portrait of a man in a brown jacket and white scarf (Self portrait ?) Oil on canvas (Rebacking; restorations; old varnish soiled) On the reverse side an inscription probably copied during the lining: GIO. CANTI / PITTORE / PARMIGIANO / MORTO LI 4 Luglio / 1716 SEPOLTO / IN MANTOVA / IN S.AMBROGIO H.:50 cm - L.: 40 cm. Provenance: Former private collection in Florence. Bibliography: Mantova nel Settecento, n° 158 p. 144 (reproduced), notice by Donatella Martelli (1983). The author mentions the presence of a larger self-portrait of Giovanni Canti in an eighteenth-century inventory of the gallery of the Villa Strozzi, near Gonzaga (province of Mantua).
