POLYCHROME EARTHENWARE PLATE. - Lot 312
POLYCHROME EARTHENWARE PLATE. Of round form, with central decoration of an Asian scene, representing a couple in traditional dress posing in a garden near a small bridge. The border is decorated with a large stylized frieze of floral motifs surrounding six cartouches and surmounted by the interlaced monogram of King George and Queen Olga of Greece (G. O.) under a royal crown. Time wear. Japan, late 19th century. Diameter: 24.5 cm. History: according to family tradition, this plate comes from a dinner service offered by the Emperor of Japan to Prince George of Greece (1869-1957), son of King George I of Greece. In gratitude for having saved the life of the Hereditary Grand Duke of Russia, Nicolas (future Nicolas II), against the attack orchestrated by a samurai during the official visit of the Grand Duke, in Osaka, in April 1891. The monogram in Greek letters G. O., was chosen in honour of the prince's parents.
