GRANDPRÉ (Louis Ohier, count of). Voyage à la côte occidentale d'Afrique, fait dans les années 1786 et 1787. Paris, Dentu, An IX. - 1801. 2 volumes in-8, half basane spotted with small vellum corners, smooth spine decorated, red title and green tomaison, yellow edges (Binding of the period). Chadenat, n°6253 (indicates by mistake 12 plates). - Gay, n°3014. First edition, decorated with 3 maps and 8 beautiful folding plates engraved in intaglio representing natives and scenes of manners. Account of the expedition led in 1786-1787 by the slave-owning captain Louis de Grandpré (1761-1846) on the west coast of Africa, corresponding today to the coasts of Gabon, Congo and Angola. It contains descriptions of the customs, habits, laws, the government and trade of this region and denounces the slave trade before the French Revolution and on the eve of the re-establishment of of slavery by Napoleon (1802). An interesting congo vocabulary is found on pages 156-162 of volume I. Slight foxing. Hinges rubbed.
