MORELLET (Abbot André). Memoir on the present situation of the Compagnie des Indes. Second edition. Found in Paris, Desaint, 1769. - NECKER (Jacques). Réponse au Mémoire de M. l'abbé Morellet sur la Compagnie des Indes... Paris, De l'Imprimerie royale, 1769. - MORELLET]. Examen de la Réponse de M. N** au Mémoire... September 1769. Found in Paris, Desaint, 1769. 3 volumes in-4, bound in paperback, untrimmed, covers of paper tourniquet (Bindings of the time). INED, n°3306. Second edition, enlarged, published the same year as the original, with a folding table: État général des dépenses annuelles de la Compagnie des Indes (p. 131). Technical memoir, impregnated with physiocratic theory, in which the abbé Morellet (1727-1819) condemns the exclusive privilege in favour of full freedom of trade. [The author] exposes here, with the help of calculations, the true situation of the Company's business, according to authentic statements emanating either from the Company, or from deputies, directors, or other personalities generally favourable to privilege (INED). The Réponse de Necker, which criticizes and refutes Morellet's remarks, as well as the Examen..., are in the original edition (cf. INED, n°3370 and n°3300). Paperback copies, as issued, in uniform covers. Staple covers and covers a little worn. Attached: - Arrest du Conseil d'État du Roi, Concernant le Commerce de l'Inde. Of August 13, 1769. Paris, De l'Imprimerie royale, 1769. In-4, 4 pages, in sheet. First edition of this important royal edict which put an end to the activities of the Compagnie des Indes: His Majesty has recognized that the Company has not made any provisions until now to put itself in a position to supply the Isles of France and Bourbon, and to fulfill the obligation imposed on it by its privilege to carry on its trade in the Indies without interruption. [...] this defect is the result of the lack of funds available to them for the trade. [...] The exercise of the exclusive privilege of the East India Company ... shall be and remain suspended until otherwise ordered by His Majesty. - Examen des décisions de M. l'Abbé Morelet [sic], sur les trois Questions importantes qui sont le sujet de son Mémoire. S.l.n.d. Booklet in-4 of 40 pages, in sheets sewn with a thread, not trimmed. Anonymous writing which refutes with force the ideas of the abbot Morellet. Small wetnesses on the first page. Of great interest, touching on the economic and ideological debate that led to the fall of the French East India Company.
