NECKER (Jacques). Compte-rendu au Roi. Paris, From the Print - Lot 75
NECKER (Jacques). Compte-rendu au Roi. Paris, From the Printing Office of the King's Cabinet, 1781. In-4, half tan basane with small vellum corners, spine with nerves underlined by cold fillets, red title page, red edges (Modern binding in the taste of the time). Goldsmiths, n°12183. - Stourm, pp. 124-125. Genuine first edition, printed in a small number and not put on the market. It was distributed to a few privileged people before the publication of the work the same year by the Royal Printing House. It is adorned with 2 watercolour folding maps (map of the gabelles and map of the drafts of France) and a large folding table giving the revenues and expenditures of the Royal Treasury. The most famous work of Necker (1732-1804), who, in his desire to introduce transparency in the functioning of the State, had the audacity to describe the principles and mechanism of its administration and to give the situation of public finances. Copy on strong paper, including a copper-engraved frontispiece by Le Beau after Le Clerc, with a medallion of Necker seen in profile: only a few copies contain one. It may have belonged to the baron de Vaulx, president of the parliament of Grenoble, as seems to be indicated by a handwritten sheet of the time bound at the end of the volume, a copy of a letter addressed by this magistrate to Necker in 1781 and the latter's reply: "The Parliament wishes to hold in your hand a copy of the account you have just rendered to the King, I am responsible for requesting it from him; his intention is to place it in his archives as a monument that will be a landmark in this century. Handwritten notation in pen on a guard: 6395 bis ter. 19th century bookplate of the Maison Saint-Stanislas in Aix-en-Provence (Ex librisDomussanctiStanislai - Bibliothecaartium). Faded stamp on the title. Covers redone.
