ROUILLE D'ORFEUIL (Augustin). The Moral Still, or Reasoned A - Lot 84
ROUILLE D'ORFEUIL (Augustin). The Moral Still, or Reasoned Analysis of all that relates to man. By the Friend of the French. In Morocco [Paris], 1773. In-8, marbled calf, spine decorated, green title, red edges (Binding of the period). Goldsmiths, n°10955. - INED, n°3937. First edition of this very varied and interesting dictionary, containing theories on the excellence of population and agriculture, on the necessity to moderate industry, on the dangers of luxury, of colonies and of the corruption of morals, etc. Rouillé d'Orfeuil, alias the Friend of the French, was a former colonel of infantry. Baron Grimm, in his Correspondence, described him as a political dreamer. There are 2 editions under the same date, with an identical collation, without it being possible to determine the precedence of one over the other: one of them (which is not ours) is distinguished by the fact that it contains on the verso of the title a printed note asking the reader to refer to an errata sheet, and another note at the bottom of the sheet Mm4. In both cases, the collation is identical and the text is uncorrected, with the same typos. Without the errata leaf, some freckling.
