First edition of this esteemed relation, illustrated with a title-frontispiece and 31 plates, most of them folding, representing fishes and marine mammals, views of the and marine mammals, coastal views, maps, costumes, etc. For the writing of this work, Father Labat used the papers of a great seafarer, captain of a frigate that left Le Havre in 1724 to engage in triangular trade between the coasts of Guinea and Cayenne. Volume IV contains the text of the famous Code Noir (pp. 535-583), as well as an abridgement of the language spoken in the Kingdom of Judah in Guinea. Some light foxing, tears not missing from a few plates. A few cuffs damaged by the binder's hand. Covers and corners of volume IV restored. Rubbing to the binding.
