HOMER. The Odyssey. Translation by Victor Bérard. Paris, La - Lot 107
HOMER. The Odyssey. Translation by Victor Bérard. Paris, La Compagnie des Bibliophiles de l'Automobile Club de France, 1930-1933. 4 volumes in-4, vellum, painted with an ochre and red decorative band on the boards and passing over the spine, the title painted in black in the Chinese style, the vellum cover of each volume mounted in lining and set with a gilt fillet, vellum folder and case (Amateur binding signed by S. Leygonie). MONUMENTAL AND VERY LUXURIOUS EDITION PRINTED ON VELIN, and illustrated with 100 colour compositions, 73 of which on double page, and a map of Telemachus' voyage on double page. The illustration and ornamentation (gold and blue lettering and fillets) are due to F.-L. Schmied, with the collaboration of Gustave Miklos, whose exact role (inspired executor or true creator) is still debated since the discovery of his sketchbooks, and of F.-L. Schmied's commissions (cf. Danuta Cichocka, Gustave Miklos. Un Grand oeuvre caché). The illustrations were woodcut by Theo Schmied and stenciled with gold and silver highlights by Jean Saudé, the famous illuminator. 6,000 stencils were needed to produce this sumptuous illustration. The book was printed by Maurice Darantière using typefaces created and cast by the Fonderie typographique de France. The edition raised to the glory of Homer, begun in November 1929 in the midst of the economic crisis, was not completed until June 1933. It was printed in 145 copies, all on vellum. COPY BOUND IN VELLUM, PAINTED WITH DECORATIVE MOTIFS FROM GREEK ANTIQUITY, IN THE OCHRE AND BLACK IN THE OCHRE AND BLACK COLOURS OF THE CRATERS. Transpositions of 2 quires in volume IV which is, however, quite complete. One case entirely demolished but not missing.
