Fragment of the EIFFEL TOWER - Lot 259
Fragment of the EIFFEL TOWER Piece of the worm gear of the elevator linking the 2nd and 3rd floors. Cast iron and inscribed EDOUX INGENIEUR PARIS 1889. 30x27 cm. Provenance: Recovered by the current owner who worked for CFEM and who participated in the lightening of the Tower between 1981 and 1982. Between 1981 and 1983, the Société Nouvelle d'Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel undertook the most important renovation work since the Tower was built. The structure of the building was lightened by more than 1,340 tons. The ascent to the 3rd floor of the tower was assured by an Edoux elevator, a system of hydraulic jacks that pushed the car 80 meters. It remained in service until 1983, when it was dismantled due to obsolescence. Moreover, being hydraulic, it could not work in winter because of the frost. It was replaced by two sets of double cabins.
