Jacques-René HÉBERT (1755-1794) the violent pamphleteer of " - Lot 379
Jacques-René HÉBERT (1755-1794) the violent pamphleteer of "Père Duchêne", substitute for the Prosecutor (Chaumette) of the Paris Commune, arrested with his supporters and guillotined. L.S., co-signed by Anaxagoras Chaumette who adds 2 autographed lines, 15 pluviôse II (February 3, 1794), to the Agent national près le district [Claude-François Payan]; 3 1/2 pages in-4, vignette and letterhead of the Commune de Paris. Chaumette, procurator-syndic of the Commune of Paris and his substitute Hébert give instructions for the registration and the execution of the laws received by the Commune of Paris. They "hastened to execute the law on the revolutionary government, stripping us of all district functions and establishing the line of demarcation between its functions and those to be retained by the Commune. In particular, the laws relating to: "Freedom of worship. To the requisition made for the service of the armies of all the shoemakers. The new mode of formation of the list of jurors. The deposit to be made by the retail merchants, tailors &ca. of the buttons of uniform. The requisition of carpenters, caulkers and maritime arts workers. To the organization of the public instruction, and finally to the requisition of all the weapons of gauge of war". They point out the infringements of the law on the revolutionary government by the sections of the revolutionary Bonnet rouge, and of Popincourt, which has dismissed its revolutionary committee; they note the "difficulty that the citizens had in obtaining meat"... On the following page, Chaumettee adds in his own handwriting: "I have just learned that many rich people, fearing that they will run out of meat, are hoarding it and salting it. We will try to verify these facts"... [The following month Hébert was arrested and guillotined, followed a few days later by Chaumette]. 2 printed documents of March 22, 1794, Proclamation of the National Convention; and Decree of the National Convention are enclosed.
