AVIGNON. L.S. by about fifteen prisoners, Palais d'Avignon i - Lot 429
AVIGNON. L.S. by about fifteen prisoners, Palais d'Avignon in the ci-devant Grande Chapelle 11 fructidor II (August 28, 1794), to citizen Mongendre, national agent near the district, in Marseille; 2 pages and a half in-fol., address. Petition following the Neuf Thermidor and the decree of the 18th, freeing the suspects against whom no charge is retained. "You know that 85 suspects from your district left as criminals for Orange, where they were to be the first victims destined to fill the 3 pits that had been prepared for 18,000 corpses. The Convention having for the second time saved their liberty, on the 9th and 10th of the past year, finally issued its wise and just decree of the 18th several of us have [...] written to their parents or to the surveillance committee, and not one of us has yet been able to obtain the reasons for his arrest"... The representative Goupilleau de Montaigu, who visited their prison that morning, was astonished to learn that the surveillance committee of Marseille did not issue the reasons for their detention. Also, "persuaded of your zeal to make execute the laws", the prisoners ask the national agent to order the committee of Marseille to deliver to each one these "reasons"...
