François de CHARETTE DE LA CONTRIE (1763-1796) general from - Lot 477
François de CHARETTE DE LA CONTRIE (1763-1796) general from Vendée, he was taken by Hoche and shot. L.S., Belleville May 8, 1795, to citizen Bureau Bâtardière in Nantes; 2 pages in-4, address (slight foxing). Very rare letter written shortly after the treaty of La Jaunaye concluded between Charrette and Ruelle for the Convention, and just after the submission of Stofflet (May 2). He thanks him for the information that he has sent him. "Those I can pass on to you in exchange for the position of the country, are not very satisfactory, since Representative Gaudin made us a present of a guard posted at Lamotte Achard. This unforeseen event has produced the greatest fermentation, and if Representative Ruelle, to whom I sent the précis, does not remedy it in a prompt manner, I fear that we will go to the extremes. You are almost an inhabitant of the Vendée and entirely a friend of this country and of peace; these considerations should engage you to join your efforts with mine to prevent the misfortunes which threaten us and to acquire new rights to our esteem and our recognition. I am very sensitive to the honest offers you are making me concerning the meeting I am to have with the Representatives. I am busy at the moment with another conference which I am anxious to attend, if circumstances will permit; when it is over and we have time to think about the other one, if it can be held in your country. Be persuaded that this incident will greatly upset my inclination"... [The conference of which Charette speaks must be the assembly of royalist leaders at Beaurepaire, where Charette met Stofflet].
