CHOUANNERIE. L.A.S. by Mme LE BORDAYS, Saint-Hilaire May 12, - Lot 479
CHOUANNERIE. L.A.S. by Mme LE BORDAYS, Saint-Hilaire May 12, 1795, to her sister citizen Le Bordays in Chalon-sur-Saône; 2 pages in-4, address with postmark. Shocking testimony on the exactions of the Chouans, by a victim... "The Chouens came four times to our house, the second one they found only one of my daughter and me with a servant, the latter fled and we remained alone my daughter and me. These wretches made us suffer martial for five hours, they cut our hair on their knees and made us ask God for forgiveness. She describes how, when she was sick, they dragged her out of her bed, then she lost consciousness, their terrible threats of death, the looting and ransacking of their house, etc.: they were forced to leave their home and go back to the city. They were forced to leave their property and take refuge in Saint-Hilaire, where they found refuge with a poor woman. She thought she had lost her mind, and her daughter is ill, having received a strong blow on the head while she was begging the Chouans not to cut their hair: "since that time she is always of an unparalleled sadness [...] all that we have experienced is well above what I mark", etc.
