Étienne-Alexandre BERNIER (1764-1806) refractory priest, one - Lot 498
Étienne-Alexandre BERNIER (1764-1806) refractory priest, one of the main Vendean leaders; he became bishop of Orléans. 2 L.A.S., [May-June ? 1795], to General Nicolas STOFFLET; 1 page and a quarter in-8, and 2 pages in-4 (small defects). Rare letters from Abbé Bernier to Stofflet during the Vendée wars. He sends him documents "for the trial of La Fleuriaye" [Jacques-Nicolas de Fleuriot de La Freulière (1738-1824), he had joined Charette against Stofflet]: "I believe that you can use clemency in his regard, but so that he will recognize that it is you alone to whom he owes it, you will do well to pronounce alone and to say, if such is your opinion, that you do not give him any grace except in order to not dishonor his family"... He addresses to him " 1° proclamations to the republicans, the declaration of the King, and yours. 2° tickets of convocation in large characters to be easily read, and printed so as to be able to put there the names of the parish, the number of days for the bread, and what one will judge suitable to add, before the date which I left for this reason in blank. Tomorrow the rest will reach you. But I will observe to you that by keeping the defense longer, we will tire our guards, will show weakness and that it will be believed that we cannot make a gathering"... He also points out that swollen streams separate from them "several very good parishes", but that the general could currently mandate those of Chaudefonds, Saint-Aubin, Saint-Lambert, etc., by making Cada, Cocu and Châlons sign the convocations. "If the republicans have been attacked as they are assured, they will immediately go on the offensive. Nothing new for the moment, everything seems quiet, it is claimed that Richarrd de Chemillé is indoctrinating the farmers, and is becoming a traitor. [...] Let's keep an eye on him...
