Days of PRAIRIAL. L.A.S. by Paul CHAIX, Chief of office at t - Lot 503
Days of PRAIRIAL. L.A.S. by Paul CHAIX, Chief of office at the Commission of Public Instruction, Paris 27 prairial III (June 15, 1795), to Clément de Ris; 2 pages and a half in-fol. very filled with a small handwriting, headed Commission exive de l'Instruction publique and small vignette. Interesting and long letter on the political events of the moment and the death of Louis XVII: at the Convention first of all one saw "the triumph of the good ones on the bad ones", the Committee of General Safety having been able to alert the public force which "purged the room of the Sessions of the monsters with human face which wanted to drink blood"; then the reorganization of the Sections... Then the autopsy of Louis XVII: "The death of the little Capet was already the talk of the town, and the report of the opening of his corpse closed the mouth to calumny. The languishing state of his sister would perhaps require that she be given some country air and that she be sent back to her parents. Here is the former gentleman in a position to change his title of Regent into that of Louis 18. [...] As he has no children and the presumptive heirs of his pretended crown are the sons of the Count of Artois, one will be able to make cardinals of them"... He then speaks about the depreciation of the assignats which reduces the civil servants to misery, "one would do much better to give us the Ration as to the soldiers"; and finally about the project of the new Constitution: "there is talk of two chambers, an executive power under a president, and five directors who will be taken out of the Convention"... He ends by citing a draft alliance between France, Prussia, Holland, Denmark, Sweden and the Ottoman Porte that will give Russia and England a hard time. He also mentions the revival of the Chouans' war, the hunt for deputies who had participated in the events of Prairial: Prieur de la Marne arrested, Chaussard and Moussard on the run, etc.
