François de CHARETTE DE LA CONTRIE (1763-1796) general from - Lot 508
François de CHARETTE DE LA CONTRIE (1763-1796) general from Vendée. 2 handwritten orders, signed for ampliation by secretary Verdiguiey, H.Q. at Belleville July 19 and August 3, 1795, "the first year of the Reigne de Louis Dix huit"; 4 pages large in-fol. (cracks in folds), and 2 pages and a half in-4. Important decrees organizing the financing and subsistence of the Catholic and Royal Army of the Vendée. Signed in the original by Charette and his second-in-command general Jean-Baptiste de Couëtus, these two decrees were sent and signed for amplification by Verdiguiey, Charrette's secretary; destined for the division chief of Legé, they were read at the sermon on August 2 and 15, 1795 by the vicar and minister of Legé, Gillier, who signed and annotated them: "Lû et publié au prône de notre messe paroissiale en la chapelle de la Guichère"... The "Generals of the Catholic and Royal army of the Bas-Poitou, the country of Retz, annexes and dependencies, otherwise known as the Vendée, forced to take up arms again for the defense of our principles of the throne and the altar, in order to protect us from the fury of an implacable enemy who has sworn to its ruin and loss; considering that the number of generous Defenders who are re-enlisting under our Flags increases every day, new means and new precautions to ensure their subsistence as well as that of the army, considering that there is no true Frenchman, who should not at this moment make the greatest efforts to support such a beautiful cause, when we ourselves and our brave comrades in arms dedicate all our property and faculty to it; when we make every day the sacrifice of our lives to it; convinced of the feelings of honor, zeal and generosity that animate [.... in general all the inhabitants of the Vendée, all those attached to our cause", they took this decree in 99 articles, modifying that of October 12, 1794, in particular to regulate the problem of those absent from the Vendée, "either as emigrants or otherwise", and their representation by their families, for the levies on the income of their goods and real estate; in the declaration of goods, the needs of the households for wheat would be stated, the surplus being levied for "the needs of the army"; those who do not work for the public cause and who "will not do any personal service in the army", will be "taxed with a contribution of the fifth of their incomes"; the traffic on the assignats and the refunding of the annuities is denounced, to the profit of the cash; the leases with farm are temporarily suspended and "the councils of parish will perceive, instead of the price of farm, the half of the fruits in kind on all the goods", etc. The decree of August 3 modified certain provisions, following complaints.
