Joseph SERVAN (1741-1808) minister of War and general of the - Lot 510
Joseph SERVAN (1741-1808) minister of War and general of the Revolution. L.S., Bordeaux 5 thermidor III (July 23, 1795), to a citizen representative; 2 1/2 pages in-fol. He gives good news of the army in the eastern Pyrenees, being reassured about its supplies: "it became almost impossible to get supplies through since the blockade of the port of the passage [Pasajes] by a Spanish warship and three frigates... However, there was no lack of supplies: they were embarked at the bottom of the river of Bordeaux and were only waiting for a convoy to escort them. Thus, one can keep the hope of an upcoming peace, "as much as it seems always more certain that Spain desired it sincerely even before our last advantages"... He praised the representative Besson, whose mission he would like to see renewed: "I cannot tell you enough how much he is loved here, and especially respected by all the parties [...How dare he put at risk, by a useless change, the salvation and tranquility of a great Commune which is the refuge of a part of the neutrals, the depot of the subsistence of our armies in the midst of the world and one of the great centers of commerce, as soon as peace is made with Spain"... To finish, he points out the arrival of "a Captain of the Indians of the north of America", who had left for Paris to "propose an alliance and cessions that would be advantageous to the republic. Nothing comes more timely to prove to the Spaniards the necessity of retroceding Louisiana to us"...
