Lazare HOCHE (1768-1797) general. P.S., Angers H.Q. 14 ventôse IV (March 4, 1796); 1 page folio, headed Armée des Côtes de l'Océan Le Général en chef with motto Res, non Verba (engraved portrait attached). Certificate in favor of Joseph Casgru, known as Fleur d'épine, a native of Arras, who saved the lives of an officer and 20 volunteers, taken by the Chouans and who were to be shot: "charged by the brigands to guard them, [...] he succeeded in facilitating their escape, by guiding them and accompanying them in their flight. [...] he made up for the wrong he had done in agreeing to serve with the Chouans, after having been taken by one of their bands, in the vicinity of Rochefort"... Hoche considers that he deserves national recognition, and that he deserves to be incorporated into the Armée du Nord as a sergeant...
