Joseph Geneviève comte de PUISAYE (1755-1827) royalist leade - Lot 543
Joseph Geneviève comte de PUISAYE (1755-1827) royalist leader; he organized the landing at Quiberon. L.A.S., April 26 [1796, to Sir WYNDHAM, Minister of War in the Pitt Cabinet]; 2 1/2 pages in-4. Important letter on the situation of the Royalist armies in the West. "Mr. Chr. de LA GARDE returns to you charged with the powers of all the Royal armies while awaiting the arrival of AbbéBERNIER [who is to be appointed Agent General in London]. He will tell you what our position is," which is better than one might think: "our sentiments have never been more extensive, and the insurrection, while appearing to die out in some parts, is only increasing in the extremities. Paris is torn by ever-rising troubles which seem soon to burst forth more strongly than ever. It therefore depends on you to make us triumph this year by giving us abundant help in time. I have six thousand paid men at present, I will have fifty when I have money. I count incessantly on the landing that I asked you for, especially of the hussars and the cannoniers. In a short time I will be in a position to receive the regiments of Castries and Mortemart. Support me, Sir, support me strongly, keep away from us the intriguers, the people who come between us and you: no DUMOUTIER, no Baron de ROLL [from the staff of the Count of Artois at the Isle of Yeu], and people of this kind, they have threatened to lose everything, they would lose everything. In a short time the scene of the revolution will change. France will be all Kingist; but several parties will tear it apart. Send us a prince, let him come alone and he will be able to reconquer the crown, but let him come promptly"...Former collections of Patrice Hennessy (1958, n° 217), then Clément Riches (23-24 May 2005, n° 175).
